Review ~ The Butcher Grill, Ranelagh

IMG_4846I love Sundays, I know it’s the end of the weekend but there’s just something about Sundays… recently we took the bus into town for a wander around, a coffee and a look in the shops. We decided to go for a late brunch / lunch. Thinking through a few different spots we decided we would hop on the luas to Ranelagh to The Butcher Grill. It’s a couple of years since we’ve been to The Butcher Grill but we have been many times before including for Brunch.

I really like the ambiance and feeling in The Butcher Grill, it’s small but perfectly formed and our favourite place to sit is at the bar. We got 2 seats at the kitchen end of the bar and settled in to enjoy nice food and wine and while away a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. White tiles, lots of wood, a somewhat rustic pared back feeling, there’s nothing fancy here. Simply white pillar candles on the tables and bar and just a cosy spot.

The Brunch menu is divided into starters, egg dishes, grilled and sides. We started with the Gambas and shared one plate (€11). As it was mid afternoon we skipped the egg section and went straight to grilled… he chose the Steak and Eggs (€21) – 8 oz rib eye steak with poached eggs, fries, salad and bearnaise. I debated between the baby back ribs and the burger but the burger won… Aged Beef Burger, smoked cheese, house pickles, fries  15.50 – ordered medium.

Gambas at The Butcher Grill

The gambas were delicious, juicy and tasty, served with little cubes of chorizo and red pepper. We had 5 decent sizes gambas so a small sharing starter. Both our main courses were excellent. It’s lovely sitting at the bar looking into the kitchen, you can see all the preparation and cooking and your own food being made and plated up.

Beef Burger & Chips

My burger was ordered and cooked perfectly medium. I know not everyones taste when it comes to mince and burgers. I didn’t even try to lift it up and instead removed the burger top and ate it with a fork and knife instead! His steak also cooked medium, with two poached eggs on top and just the right amount of bearnaise sauce. The steak came with a side of chips also and some dressed leaves.

The wine list is good although tends towards being a little on the pricier side, we had a bottle of Chateau La Baronne, Corbieres (€42). It would be nice to see more good options in the 30-40 euro bracket though.

The Butcher Grill was busy throughout our visit, there was maybe one or two tables empty at a time. We loved our seats though and decided to stay on after our food and enjoy the wine. We were brought a little freebie dessert then also, a taster of their chocolate mousse pot dessert which was really delicious. I’m not a dessert person so having this little one was perfect for me.

Sitting at the bar has another advantage that you can see all the cocktail making, I love watching cocktails being made, the time and effort they put into them is amazing. Yes they take a while but they are worth it!

I really enjoyed revisiting The Butcher Grill. The food is good and it feels authentic and real. Friendly staff, and a lovely feel inside makes it a place you want to return to. Saying that there’s only certain seats I would want, I like the bar or the window, the interior tables for 2 are a bit close to the other tables and just not as comfortable. We will return, brunch is a great way to try The Butcher Grill but it’s equally good in the evenings. I also need to have one of those amazing looking cocktails!
